For over a century societal and economic development has been tied to the internal combustion engine (ICE) as it enabled extensive levels of personal mobility that helped reduce poverty and improved billions of lives. However, the costs to the environment and climate of conventional private ICE automobile use as well as emissions-intensive aviation and freight transport have become obvious. With the transportation sector, there are a variety of existing sustainable mobility options to move people and freight in both urban and non-urban environments. The use of transportation technology is dependent on individual behavior and choice as well as local constraints and contexts, policy, and investments; these complexities are impossible to capture at the global level. Understanding the assumptions, trade-offs, and integration required for comprehensive transportation solutions is critical for our global journey towards drawdown.
